Cashier’s Corner:
Dangerous Animals (2025)
It’s the little touches that take this from a typical slasher/survival flick to one worth your time: Jai Courtney searching a thrift store for a replacement VHS camera, Hassie Harrison biting her thumb off! The escape/pursuit back and forth throughout is well balanced without feeling exhausting. I thought there’d be more surfing, tbh
The Rip (2025)
A Damon/Affleck Netflix exclusive seems like a recipe for a dud. Boy was I wrong. The tight plot and high stakes had this one tightening the screws on us. I’m glad it wasn’t all told through flashbacks, just the beginning, as it would have made it all feel kids plot. Would have loved to see Scott Adkins with a larger role, but I’ll take what I can get! Make it a movie night!
Influencers (2025)
First, I didn’t realize this was a sequel, but I don’t think seeing the first installment is all that necessary. Though maybe I wouldn’t have felt as yanked around in terms of perspective between Catherine and Madison. I’m still not entirely sure who I should be siding with here, like obviously not the killer, but also kind of the killer? I mean Catherine turns the girlfriend she murdered into her AI chatbot/agent because she still loves her???? It halfheartedly skewers the manosphere and the hypocrisies of influencers, but I guess it has to tie into its name somehow
